EMPLOYEES are key to the success of any business. Success of any leader depends much on the ability to lead and motivate the team as much as it depends on their capabilities. How much do you as a leader focus and acknowledge the capabilities in your team to support your leadership initiatives? In this article, I will focus on some ways leaders can harness the potential in their teams in order to drive sustainable growth of the organisation:

- Ignite the positive orientation in your team
A good leader will always realise that there is a spark of positive orientation in every member of the team regardless of their position on the organogram. Tap into that positive vibe to create and push through ideas that propel the organisation to another level.
- Detect your team’s capabilities
Develop your team’s capabilities and if they appear not be in sync with the organisational goals, invest in training that is focused on the real needs of the organisation. Doing so will help you instill a culture that will help you in driving your strategy.
- Make Accountability Clear to All
Implement properly designed development plans for team members backed up by a robust and easy to manage performance review system regularly. Be sure that there are consequences for behavior that does not fit into the system and reward for excellent performance.
- Encourage Relationship Building
Without positive relationship among the team and with clients, what intends to be built may not be a success. A good leader will always strive to rally his/her team toward building a team that cherishes good relationship. Good internal relationships make it easy for the team to relate well with those outside the organisation.
- Your Leadership Style Matters
What type of a leader are you? The way you define your leadership style determines the energy to be exhibited by your team. Always endeavor to be that leader who energizes his/her team by the way you engage them and respect them. This results in positive energy that propels them to go an extra mile.
- Earn Trust and Respect of Your Team
As a leader you are more likely to earn trust and respect from your subordinates by the way you carry yourself. Your employees are more likely to listen and follow your lead if they have respect for you. Therefore, it is of great importance that as a leader you pay attention to this critical area.
- Involve you Team Members
Employees as team members have a lot contribute to the success of any leadership initiatives. Involve all levels of employees to the lowest level in co-creating sustainable solutions for the organisation. Strive for ownership of any initiatives being considered rather than by-in.
