WHEN women are empowered to reach their full potential, the positive changes they make for themselves radiate throughout their families and communities.  Margaret Thatcher once wisely remarked, “Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understanding the problems of running a country.” This profound statement underscores the vast potential women hold to effect positive change at all levels of society.

A comprehensive survey by The Entrepreneurial Magazine revealed that social women entrepreneurs exhibit a deep personal connection to the missions and goals they choose for their enterprises. Moreover, it demonstrated that the gender gap in social entrepreneurship is significantly narrower than in conventional entrepreneurship. This finding suggests that social entrepreneurship can serve as a potent catalyst for increasing female entrepreneurship and enhancing women’s participation in the labor market.

In consistence with this background, Sabrina Kundai Chambara stands as an incomparable visionary behind Women for Economic and Social Empowerment (WESE). Her trailblazing work showcases her untiring vow to uplifting women, particularly those at the grassroots level. Through her profound insights and innovative approaches, she possesses the foresight and creativity necessary to drive transformative change that benefits women and society at large in a highly efficient manner.

She started her journey as a student gender activist while studying at the Chinhoyi University of Technology. During her time as a student, she became deeply involved in advocating for gender equality and women’s rights.

Established in 2020, WESE is a registered trust since April 12, 2021. It strives to promote gender equality, economic empowerment, and social inclusion for women. Addressing systemic barriers in education, employment, entrepreneurship, and leadership, WESE’s holistic approach empowers women in Zimbabwe through skills development, knowledge enhancement, and contributes to advancing gender equality, women’s rights, and sustainable development.

Through the implementation of diverse initiatives, WESE Trust has effectively amalgamated commerce and social issues, thereby enhancing the lives of individuals in Zimbabwe, with a particular focus on marginalized women communities.

“WESE Trust has significantly enhanced the lives of disadvantaged women in Zimbabwe through its economic empowerment programs, notably the Girls Entrepreneurship Project in Rusape, Manicaland Province. These initiatives equip women with the necessary skills and resources to establish their own businesses or secure employment.

“The organization has formed partnerships with financial institutions to provide financial assistance to marginalized women, expanding access to vital information beyond urban areas. Furthermore, WESE Trust supports women-owned enterprises by facilitating market access, funding opportunities, mentorship, and guidance to overcome business challenges.

“In addition to economic empowerment, the organization advocates for gender equality, raises awareness about women’s issues, and engages with policymakers and community leaders to promote inclusive policies and address social challenges such as gender-based violence, healthcare access, education, and unpaid care work,” she remarked.

The Trust focuses on enhancing women’s access to healthcare services, specifically sexual and reproductive health, through targeted initiatives. They also provide disadvantaged women with sanitary products and hygiene items. Awareness campaigns on gender-based violence are conducted. Leadership training programs, both online and physical, are offered to encourage women’s involvement in governance and decision-making. WESE advocates for gender-sensitive policies and laws, while community mobilization efforts involve organizing women’s groups, cooperatives, and networks to cultivate knowledge-sharing and resource empowerment.

Throughout her journey as a passionate gender activist and the esteemed founder of WESE she has continually sought inspiration from a diverse array of sources.

“I have been inspired by the resilience and leadership of women who have overcome challenges to make a positive impact in their communities and society at large with special mention to Wangari Mathaai from Kenya and locally have been following the likes of Jessie Manjome who have been very active during the Government of National Unity.

“My inspiration also comes from grassroots activists who work tirelessly to bring about positive change at the local level, advocating for social justice and equality.  I am also influenced by feminist scholars who have contributed valuable insights and knowledge to the field of gender studies, shaping my understanding of gender dynamics and empowerment strategies. With special mention to Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity” (1990) written by Judith Butler,” she said.

While some argue that achieving true women’s empowerment and gender equality necessitates a fundamental shift in societal attitudes towards women, encompassing respect, dignity, fairness, and equal treatment, Chambara acknowledges that gender equity is a multifaceted and intricate matter that has been the subject of discussion and debate for decades.

She said: While strides have been made in select domains, true gender equity remains an ongoing struggle. Despite legislative, policy, and advocacy efforts, disparities persist globally. Cultural norms, societal expectations, economic conditions, and institutional biases perpetuate gender inequality. Although progress has narrowed gaps in education and workforce participation, hurdles persist.

“Gender pay gaps, underrepresentation in leadership, gender-based violence, and discrimination endure. The pursuit of gender equity may appear daunting, yet it is an imperative. The journey is arduous, but it demands collective action and unwavering commitment. Gender equity is not a theoretical notion but a moral obligation that necessitates the dedication of society as a whole.”

Her accomplishments are credited to the support she receives from her loving family. Meticulous planning, efficient time management, setting boundaries, seeking support, embracing workplace flexibility, and prioritizing self-care are among the factors that have contributed to her ability to navigate various responsibilities and maintain a harmonious equilibrium in her life.
