IF I had been told these things about money earlier in my life, then I would definitely have been better off money-wise than I am right now. In our culture, money issues are not freely discussed in families, it’s like a taboo. We are left to figure it out on our own when we get there, but it might be too late for some of us. We need to start discussing money issues in our families and societies so that children understand money issues at a younger age. In this article I lay out the five things I wish I had known about money earlier on in my life.

1. You need money to make money

As funny as this sounds, believe me it is very true. Starting from nothing really does not exist, you need money for that business to take off. A lot of the entrepreneurs are going to argue on this one but the data you started your online business with needs money, the raw materials, the company registration and every other stage to get your business or idea running. Before starting make sure that you have money to start with so that you are not caught off-guard. Start saving for that business, look for angel investors or crowd fund depending on how big that idea is. It might not be much, but you are going to need something to get you started. An idea alone without the money will not get you anywhere, remember that.

2. Easy come, easy go

The easier the money comes to your pocket, the faster the money departs. This really addresses the issues that people have been dealing with during the Covid 19 pandemic. There has been a lot of pyramid schemes going around and a lot of people have become victims because they wanted easy money. Money gained with little to no effort will go very fast or may be lost in the process, it will end in real tears. You should work to get money, put in effort and time in making money. Money earned through hard work and sweat will be sweet to enjoy and the only tears you will have will be tears of joy.

3. Money is a visitor

Money is a visitor and it stays where it is respected and appreciated. Treat a visitor well and they will always come back, visitors will not always be there but they will always come back where they feel at home. Living your life without a budget, impulsive spending, putting money into pyramid schemes and having no financial plan is utter disrespect to money. That is why in cases like these, it goes really fast. Money cannot stand being disrespected at all. That is why people who budget and make financial plans on how to use their money always have more at the end. Where it is respected, money stays and multiplies.

4. Money is never enough

The reason why billionaires always want to make more, the same reason why they are always looking for opportunities which make them more money is because you can never have enough money. You move from a bicycle to a car, then the latest version of a brand some go as far as owning a fleet of cars. Then there are others who move to yachts and private jets. Others will want to make more for the future generations that come after them, which means they will always be out there looking for opportunities. Whatever the reason is, no one really has enough of money. People are always out there looking for better opportunities and money will always find a use wherever you go. The more money one has the more his desires grow which means they will always look for more money to satisfy their growing desires. Now to address this, I am going to leave you with a statement by one ancient Greek philosopher who founded epicureanism, his name was Epicurus. He said, “If thou wilt make a man happy, add not unto his riches but take away his desires”.

5. Money should work for you

All my life I have been hearing that you have to work hard for money, work to get money and work again. It was all about me working for money, only now did I actually realize that money has to work for me. At this point, most who grew up in the same system as I are asking: how that is possible? How does money work for someone? The answer is simple: INVEST. By investing, you have put your money to work and it will bring you returns. Your money will multiply, it will bring you more money and you won’t have to work for money ever in your life. Investing is making money toil for you whilst you focus on other important things in your life.  Put your money to work!

Take note of these things and your approach to money issues will change.
